ABOUT THE ARTWORK:
I’ve grown tired of solely trauma focused narratives about disability and find myself turning towards ideas of authenticity and disabled joy. Garments and double entendre seem to be worthy vessels of this scarred pride - things that conceal, reveal, and frame the body.
BIO:
Kat Chudy (they/them) is a disabled queer American artist currently living and working in Florida. They grew up the child of military parents, traveling extensively throughout the United States during their childhood and continue to travel frequently whenever they can. They have been to 29 states and have visited Mexico, Brazil, and Canada. Chudy has lived in the southwest for more than 20 years and was forced to leave during the pandemic in search of better, more equitable health care. They have an extensive educational background in both art and science and seek to find the edge where the two disciplines meet and inform one another through the subject of their work – invisible disability. Chudy is an advocate for disability rights, healthcare rights, and educational reform.
DESCRIPTION:
Sick Coat
A dark haired figure in a black face mask models a nubby yellow wool sport coat with black lapels. Two loops of delicate black chain dangle from the breast pocket. Small square black studs define the upper edge of the two flap pockets. The button holes are stitched in black. Appliqued on the back of the coat are large capital letters cut from textured black leather that read SICK. Two black roses adorn the shoulders with trailing black threads. A piece of black mesh pokes from the right vent, and the edges of the vent are trimmed with iridescent beads.
