“Elisa Jane Carmichael belongs to the Quandamooka people of Minjerribah, North Stradbroke Island and is very passionate

about nurturing and preserving her strong connection to the sand and sea, Yoolooburrabee. Her current practice visually

explores the beauty of nature and surrounding environment, drawing inspiration from her cultural identity and heritage.”

Elisa Jane Carmichael

DESCRIPTION:

"Patterns of the Land is a lower leg and foot prosthetic, brightly painted with dots in white, blue, pink, yellow, red, green and orange.
Amoeba-like shapes and swirls cover the calf and dotted stripes extend down the top and arch of the foot. A metal rod that joins the calf and foot is tightly wound and knotted with wool yarn in bright pink, orange and yellow. The bright colors, dots and yarn are in contrast to the utilitarian shape of the prosthetic.
Elisa Jane Carmichael’s Patterns of the Land was first seen at Priscilla Sutton’s 2013 Spare Parts exhibit in Brisbane, Australia. Ms. Sutton gave different artists spare prosthetic limbs to transform, and the artists gave the limbs new lives and meanings." -A. Laura Brody
