ARTIST INTERVIEW with ASL interpretation:
ABOUT THE ART:
A person signing “core” in this art created during the pandemic. In this case, core means staying focused on the self and not being panicked by current events. At the present time, artists in the Deaf community are struggling everyday for Deaf rights. The artist hopes that their core is reconnecting to nature and climate science, and humans will be centered and move towards activism.
STATEMENT:
Many people are not aware of the oppression of deaf people.
Deaf people suffer due to audism (the belief that to hear and to speak is superior to being Deaf), as well as phonocentrism. Deaf people’s language, American Sign Language (both visual or tactile) is also targeted due to linguicism, which is the belief that speech and English are superior to other languages.
Publicly sharing Deaf View/Image Art (a genre of works about the Deaf experience) with the community of the dominant culture not only promotes awareness of our struggles, but also ensures that the rights of Deaf people, most especially children, are not denied. It ensures that our language, ASL, is celebrated.

DESCRIPTION:
Breathe In/Out
The head and torso of a figure faces us. The figure has a pale complexion, very short dark hair, closed eyes and full pink lips. The figure’s larynx and lungs are exposed, and the lungs are filled with branches and pale pink flowers. The figure’s arms are bent at the elbow. One palm is over the other with one finger from each hand touching. On a blue background behind the figure are concentric circles of orange, rust and pale green. Thick brown trees with dark green leaves sprout from the figure’s shoulders.
