ABOUT THE ARTWORKS:
“Altered Aesthetics explores beauty within disabled bodies. Collaborating with four people with amputations, I created wearable sculptures that wrap around and extend from their residual limbs to create artistic expressions. My unique sculptural (non-medical and nonfunctional) “prosthetics” are visual homages to the body’s story. They transform the wearers’ bodies into works of art and challenge limiting beliefs they and others may hold.”
BIO:
Becca Cerra LLC provides one-of-a-kind creations that combine traditional craft practices with contemporary art-making approaches to imagine something truly unique and memorable. Becca currently works in two realms: conceptual art and functional sculpture. She recently began teaching blacksmithing classes at the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center and is eager to expand her offerings in the coming months.
DESCRIPTIONS:
Altered Aesthetics I:
The image is a life-sized photo of a woman who faces us, her head tilted toward the right. She has wavy, dark, shoulder length hair. She wears a dark rust red garment with an asymmetrical neck line. It covers her right arm and the loose fitting leg obscures most of her bare right lower leg and all of her foot. Under the rust garment is a peach colored knee length body suit with a scooped neck. Her left arm is bare and the left hand rests on ropes of pewter colored, twisted steel that wind around the stump of her left leg. The steel cables curve and zig zag to the floor. On the left is a square white pedestal which holds a swirled steel sculpture. It appears to be the same as the prosthetic leg the woman wears.
Altered Aesthetics II:
This image is a life sized photo of a slender man with short dark hair, dark eyes and a short brown beard. He stands facing left and turned slightly toward us. He wears a peach colored shirt that blends with the color of his skin. The clinging shirt reveals the muscles of his chest and torso over dark, peach colored, tight-fitting pants. Both legs are amputated below the knee. Wrapped around the ends of the limbs are ropes of pewter colored, twisted steel cable that are used as prosthetic lower legs. The cables curve and undulate and end in curlicues that rest on the white floor.
