ABOUT THE ARTWORK:
Muse Series explores the dysfunction of systems to communicate with the whole body and interrelated parts that flow together in various stages of growth and decay. This work experiments with mixed-media materials to achieve strong yet translucent vascular-like areas by incorporating fiberglass screens and slip-coated burlap into paper clay. Many different paper qualities are cast and woven together with various gauges of copper wire and strengthened with epoxy.
STATEMENT:
As an artist with disabilities caused from Ataxia, a rare neurological disease that is progressive and affects my ability to walk, talk, balance myself, and use fine motor skills, my artwork not only considers the essential structure of skeletal or embryonic animal references but has become a vehicle to interpret transformative changes occurring in my body caused from the progression of the disease. My work researches and brings awareness of people living with disabilities while pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. My art discusses these concepts by focusing on movement's copious flow, a manner of passage of the living body to one’s gait and gesture. This work drives examination of and permits curiosity for uncovering aspects of human nature and the wonder of origin. These juxtaposed ideas reveal blurred distinctions between connections and dysfunction exhibited in multi-media, multivalent invocations of the body.
DESCRIPTION:
Muse Series/Ataxians
The two floating figures have wire mesh wings, pale faces and hands, and twisted wire bodies and limbs stuffed here and there with bits of crumbled paper. The paper has hints of color: dark green, peach, and brown. The figure on the left has both hands extended to the front. It has an oval face, closed eyes, straight nose, dark red lips and a round chin. The eyes are red rimmed and there are smudges of red on the cheeks. The figure’s left leg is bent at the knee with the foot behind while the right leg and foot point down. The figure on the right has both hands raised over its head. Its upper legs are fused and end in two strands of wire. This figure has a broad forehead, closed eyes, wide nose, and a pointed chin. The right side of its face is thinner than the left.
