ABOUT THE ARTWORK:
I made this piece about neurodiversity, but it ended up also having political, historical and sociological dimensions.
I live with materials. But I am also an idea. When I have lived with materials for long enough they sometimes become part of that idea. This can take weeks, or 30 seconds. I had about 10 black antique telephone handsets and a beige rotary phone body in my studio for a few years. I do a lot of work with phones. They are a perfect vehicle for the kinds of ideas I want to discuss about communication and how it happens. I start with something physical and as I live with the idea of it, the idea becomes more diverse, and it begins to have sociological, political, and historical ramifications even though it is the same physical object as before.

STATEMENT:
My name is David Isakson. I am neurodiverse. I make objects that are like names for this kind of diversity. I weld and join materials to create humorous deconstructions out of ideas operating as everyday objects.
DESCRIPTION:
The Party Line
On a rectangular silver base sits a pale gold rotary phone with its dial and electronic parts missing. On the cradle are 9 black hand-sets missing their ear and mouth pieces. A tangle of rusty wires bundle the handsets together.
