“Our goal is to expand society’s limited imagination of people with disabilities and the concept of art. We ask: how do our bodies experience freedom and barriers? How do we create equality and common space for each individual to inhabit their distinct bodies and movements, with their own sense of comfort?”

DESCRIPTION:
"The Rally is a color photograph of Sandwishes Studios artists at Taiwan’s annual disability rights rally. They decorated three wheelchairs to call attention to specific disability issues. The decorations address the lack of accessible public transportation, lack of accessible restrooms and lack of employment opportunities for disabled people.
In the photograph, three people in bright purple t-shirts sit in wheelchairs decorated with bold graphic designs. On the right is a Taiwanese man with a purple headband over his short, dark hair and wire-rimmed glasses. His lips are tightly shut and his left hand is clenched in a fist. His wheelchair has a yellow and black safety transportation vehicle graphic over its left side. His wheel covers show a stick figure pushing a wheelchair. Large Taiwanese language symbols surround the stick figure.
In the middle is an older man with short grey hair. He holds a sign in Taiwanese in his left hand. His lips are pursed and he gives a “thumbs up” gesture with his right hand. His wheelchair is decorated like a flying white toilet.
To our left is a woman with shoulder length dark hair and large, dark sunglasses. She holds a large white sign with Taiwanese characters in her left hand. With her right hand she gives a “thumbs-up” signal. Her motorized wheelchair is taller than the two men’s chairs, but she is much shorter than they are. Her bright red tennis shoes just reach the bottom of her chair’s seat. Her wheelchair is decorated with the profile view of a puffy blue office chair and a grey cartoon briefcase." -A. Laura Brody
