ABOUT THE ARTWORK:

2 years
1,000 people
4,800 prescription bottles
1 community
There is no shame in taking medication, whether it's an antibiotic or an antidepressant.

STATEMENT:

This project, first and foremost, belongs to the community.
Over two years ago, I sought to collect prescription bottles for a prospective sculpture that would relate implications linked to mental illness. I shared this pursuit via word of mouth, online community forums, social media, and a dozen flyers. I watched in astonishment as bags of empty prescription bottles flooded my front porch, messages came pouring into my various inboxes, and even boxes arrived with postage hailing from all corners of the country. The support I felt was all-encompassing.
I wish I could personally name each contributor, as every single one of you made this project what it is. I hope you find joy in the work and feel a sense of pride, knowing your little bottles exist somewhere within this installation.
To my family, friends, and Baltimore community, you have touched my core with your overwhelming support, unwavering encouragement, beautiful personal narratives, and stories of survival. This work unintentionally became a way for us to re-attain a sense of belonging and find connection when we desperately needed it most.

DESCRIPTION:

over/medicated/under
This large abstract hanging sculpture is constructed from uniformly cut rings of golden orange prescription containers. The rings are joined in six places by cable ties neatly trimmed. The mesh like creation floats, with undulating bumps and bubbles.
