ARTIST INTERVIEW with ASL interpretation:
ABOUT THE ART:
“These photographs are a body of work I called The Independence Series. It includes three bodies of photographs. Completely Tilted Back, A View From A Lift, and From The Driver’s Seat. These are three things that represent my independence as a disabled person. Completely Tilted Back are photographs from the perspective of being completely tilted back in my wheelchair. This gives me independence because I live with chronic pain, and being able to relieve my sitting bones, helps me be out in the world longer. View From A Lift are photographs I take from the lift on my van. This represents my independence as a disabled person being out in the world with everyone else. The last body of work is From the Driver’s Seat. These photographs show the mundane things people see in the driver’s seat while simultaneously breaking the assumption that disabled people cannot drive themselves to places. As a fine art photographer, I enjoy the art of photographing what I see in the world and sharing my perspective of this world as a disabled person.”
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Priya Ray is the force behind DIYabled, a grassroots group that believes DIY spaces are essential to creating a healthy thriving community. To support thriving community, DIY spaces need to be inclusive and accessible to people of all races, genders, sexual orientation and ability. The goal of DIYabled is to provide a place where we can ALL work together as a community to find solutions to make DIY spaces accessible to People Living with Disabilities (PLD).
DESCRIPTIONS:
Completely Tilted Back 3
In this color photograph, we look up at a ceiling which is black with a wedge-shaped opening in it. The opening has rectangular tiles with several holes for recessed lights. Bright light reflects up into the tiles from the edges of the opening. The larger black ceiling has evenly spaced recessed lights. A faint arc of yellow light illuminates the wall at the far rear of the work.
Completely Tilted Back 4
In this color photograph, we look up at a ceiling painted bronze with carved crown moldings. Pipes painted bronze hang from the ceiling. On the right hangs one round heating duct with a rectangular silver colored register on the side. The walls are pale green with dark silhouettes of delicate plants. In the upper right is a light fixture with a cream-colored round globe surrounded by dark reddish-brown wire that forms a loose nest around the globe. The light fixture hangs from delicate black chains. In an opening in the lower right are two small hanging lights the larger is white; the smaller is yellow.
